National Security Commission on AI recommends digital reserve corps and academy

The National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence is out with a new set of recommendations, many of which are talent-focused. In particular, the commission recommended Monday the U.S. should create a digital reserve corps and digital service academy to increase the pipeline of tech-savvy workers into the public sector. The commission also recommended expanding scholarship-for-service systems that would offer more financial help for those looking to advance technical skills in exchange for time in government. NSF to disburse $75M between 3 new quantum computing institutes

The National Science Foundation is splitting $75 million among three institutes to advance quantum computing research and development and train the workforce on quantum technologies. Universities are hosting the institutes, which will leverage the resources of the Department of Energy's National Laboratories and industry to craft in-person and online curricula for students and teachers from primary school to professional development. “Through the Quantum Leap Challenge Institutes, NSF is making targeted investments,” said NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan in an announcement Tuesday. “Within five years, we are confident these institutes can make tangible advances to help carry us into a true quantum revolution.” More from Dave Nyczepir.

Penn State launches online master's degree in spatial data science

A new program at Penn State is designed to arm students with the skills to work with location data from devices like smart phones and tablets. The program arrives as a rising number of companies use location data to gain insights into the purchasing choices consumers and how they move in their communities. The program is especially timely given the growing use of location data to help track and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Betsy Foresman has the story.
